In the past
decade, business competitions have become increasingly frequent throughout the
business community. They have taken root in places such as the Wharton School
of Business, and a number of other universities and companies that encourage
small business growth. For some, the pull of competitions is the cash prize;
however, the winnings are said to be insufficient to really get a business
going. The real award is the increased confidence and investment opportunities
from winning a business competition. For many small businesses, it is difficult
to win, let alone participate in, a business competition. The key, though, is
preparation. Preparation yields a more knowledgeable and impressive business
plan, and is a skill which relates to business in general – not only
competitions. For low-income communities, it is difficult to find such a
competition. But, it only takes one win to transform a business from an idea into
a reality.
